Annual Conference of the Interreg VI-A Romania–Bulgaria Programme – A Celebration of Cooperation and a Shared Future
November 3, 2025On 30 October 2025, the representatives of the Interreg VI-A Romania-Bulgaria Programme, together with partners from both sides of the border gathered for the Annual Conference.
The event celebrated the achievements of the Interreg VI-A Romania–Bulgaria Programme, but also 35 years of Interreg, highlighting both the deep and lasting impact of cross-border cooperation in the Romania–Bulgaria border region.
The conference took place in an inspiring setting — the Conference Hall of the Durankulak–Hamangia Archaeological Park in Shabla, Bulgaria, a beautiful site restored through the ROBG - 407 project – “Restoration of the unique common cultural heritage and promotion of the joint tourist product ‘Hamangia – the first civilization of Old Europe’”, funded by the Interreg V-A Romania–Bulgaria Programme and implemented by Shabla Municipality. This site, brought back to life through joint effort, offered participants a vivid symbol of what cross-border cooperation truly means: preserving and valuing shared heritage for a shared future.
Held in the form of an interactive and inspirational panel discussion, the conference brought to light the most valuable aspects of cross-border cooperation. Participants had the unique opportunity to hear directly from enthusiastic project beneficiaries about what cooperation really means and how it has transformed communities on both sides of the Danube. The atmosphere was constructive and filled with optimism, reflecting the strong determination of partners to continue working together.
Throughout the discussions, participants explored how Interreg funding has contributed to developing infrastructure, protecting the environment, promoting culture and improving the quality of life for citizens in the border area. In an open and inspiring dialogue, the speakers shared their experiences, lessons, and visions for the region’s future. They spoke of bold beginnings, partnerships that have grown into friendships and the young people who will carry forward this legacy of cooperation.
From every story, one message clearly emerged: the greatest achievement of the Programme lies not only in completed projects but in the trust built between people and institutions – a foundation upon which the future of cooperation can confidently grow.
The conference concluded with a memorable cultural and educational experience: a guided visit to the archaeological site, where participants discovered fascinating insights into the ancient Hamangia Culture. This journey through time highlighted our shared roots and reaffirmed that beyond economic projects, Interreg helps us rediscover and celebrate our common heritage.
The event in Shabla once again underlined the strong commitment of partners from Romania and Bulgaria to work together to overcome challenges and seize opportunities.
At 35 years of Interreg, the story of cooperation continues — with the same energy, the same trust and the same conviction that beyond borders, communities can truly grow together.
